While peak moving season is the May – September months, you may be unable to avoid your move during this “rush hour.” Although moving costs are higher during this peak season, we are looking to help you offset some of that difference! No matter if you’re moving locally or long distance, our four moving and packing saving strategies are bound to help you retain some green, or, at the very least, open your eyes to new and typically-unseen moving and packing ideas! Keep reading to discover our four moving and packing strategies to help you save before your move.
The First Dilemma: Movers vs Friends
Despite their universal love for free pizza, beer, and good intentions, your friends can either be a help or a hassle when helping with your move. Before you dedicate yourself to finding friends to help you move, or hiring moving professionals, ask yourself the following questions:
- How many items will I have to move?
- How much money will I save by asking my friends to help?
- Can my friends handle fragile or cumbersome items with care?
- Will my friends be able to help move a complicated item like a piano or a hot tub?
If you were able to answer all these questions with relative ease, then you should be in good shape to make a decision. However, if you had to consider all the possible outcomes of a move with your friends, you may want to consider professional movers. Not only do they have years of experience (and muscle!), they have specifically been trained to be your personal moving assistant.
Downsize Before the Move
After years of enjoying the house that has become your home, it is a possibility that you have grown detached from some of your belongings. While the emotional appeal may have faded, this will work to your advantage when you’re looking to reduce the amount of packing you’ll need to do. Despite your lack of interest in some of your items, it by no means they are no longer wanted. As long as your schedule and space allows, open up your home for a garage or estate sale, list your unwanted items through online buying and selling communities like craigslist, or even consider donating the larger items for a sizeable tax deductible.
There will always be a mad dash to gather as many packing supplies as possible in preparation for your pack, but think outside the box, literally! Boxes may be the standard for packing, which can be obtained in excess from family, friends or online communities, but why not use what you already have in your home? You can use suitcases, shoe boxes, transparent clothing containers, or any other suitable yet durable container. However, when you pack, also consider these ideas: Use clothing such as socks to pack fragile items like glasses and use towels to separate plates to kill two birds with one stone. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your packing methods, and don’t waste your money on packing supplies that you don’t need!
Measure Twice, Cut Once
Like a master craftsman who desires to make the perfect cut, you too should desire to make the best decision possible by double checking your decisions. We understand moving into a new home can be fun and exciting, but don’t let all that excitement get the best of you. It may be tempting to purchase new and invigorating furniture and household items, but take a second to remember all the items you’re bringing with you from your old home. It can be a mistake if you have two items that only have one place and purpose in your home. Also, be sure that if you are to purchase any new furniture, be fully aware of the dimensions of your new home. It would be a shame to purchase a lovely new couch but be unable to fit it inside!
